It’s important to know that homeowners and petowners are liable for the actions of their pets in public places or on private property.

So, here are some helpful suggestions if you or someone you know has been attacked by an animal:

If you have been seriously inured, call 911 or immediately seek medical treatment

  • Report the attack to the owner of the animal
  • Report the attack to law enforcement officials or animal control
  • Get owner information: name, address, telephone numbers
  • Get witness information: names, addresses, phone numbers
  • If you have a camera, take pictures of your injuries and the scene of the attack
  • Keep the clothing you were wearing at the time of the attack

  • If receiving medical treatment, give your treating physician a detailed description of the attack, the injuries sustained, and any and all current complaints
